What does it mean to have certified Organic and Fair-trade coffee beans?
USDA organic certified means being able to produce under U.S. standards established by USDA’s National Organic Program. Fair-trade certified signifies being concerned with alleviating poverty through greater equity in international trade. Organic coffee beans are grown on farms that use processes that are good for the environment and the soil; furthermore, the production must be in compliance with organic practices, which further points to non-consumption of pesticides, herbicides or others damaging chemicals. Fair trade organization promotes sustainability, trading partnerships based on transparency, dialogue and respect. Human rights are encouraged, and bearing the label of Fair-trade means valuing farmers rights, safe working conditions and fair pay.
